Utah Motorsports Park: A Paradise for Motor Racing
In 1894, the first motor race in history was held in Paris, where the winner sped along the track at 24 kilometers per hour. Since then, automobiles have become increasingly faster, yet people's passion for motorsports has never faded. At Geely, we have pursued our motor racing dreams for 34 years. Throughout the company's growth, we have witnessed the passion and expectations of generations of Chinese people for motorsports in China and across the world.
2019 marked a proud milestone for Geely Holding Group: its Lynk & Co Cyan Racing team claimed the championship of the World Touring Car Cup (WTCR), setting a new benchmark for Chinese automotive brands participating in global motorsports. In 2006, Geely also launched the Geely Super Cup, a motor racing event open to the general public. As a professional platform, it allows racing drivers to hone their skills and achieve continuous growth. Meanwhile, it creates an interactive space for motorsport fans, offering them a glimpse into the vibrant and passionate world of motor racing.
The renowned Miller Motorsports Campus was built in 2006 and acquired by Geely in 2018. It has since been officially renamed Utah Motorsports Campus. We had the privilege of speaking with Dixon Hunt, General Manager of the campus, to gain deeper insights into the circuit's glorious history and the promising prospects of its cooperation with Geely.

— Please talk about the history and founding process of Utah Motorsports Campus.
Larry Miller was an avid car enthusiast and one of the most prominent automotive tycoons in the American West. In addition, he was also the owner of the NBA team, the Utah Jazz. His personal car was an unforgettable Shelby Cobra. However, as he grew older, he hoped to find a place where he could freely tinker with and display his "toys". Therefore, Larry commissioned a man named Allan Wilson to build a racetrack. Allan Wilson had spent his entire life constructing racetracks, including the one recently built for China's Mitime Group.
The initial budget for Allan Wilson and Larry was approximately 5 million US dollars. They planned to build a racetrack where they could compete with friends and enjoy high-speed driving. Yet as time passed and circumstances changed, their vision became increasingly sophisticated, eventually evolving into a racetrack project costing 100 million US dollars. The racetrack currently covers 500 acres of land, including a 4.5-mile track area equipped with various facilities such as off-road tracks, dirt tracks, karting tracks, test drives areas, and rally cross tracks.
— So essentially, this racetrack was built out of personal passion?
Like Li Shufu, founder of Geely Holding Group, Larry Miller possessed extraordinary vision. Both share an indescribable passion for motorsports, and both were fortunate enough to turn their hobbies into careers. Our mission is to operate it as a viable, profitable business and generate substantial profits for the group.
In the United States, motorsports boasts a century-long history, ranging from NASCAR, which originated as a private sporting activity, to various road racing events. There is an interesting saying: "The world's first race happened right after two cars were built, because they finally had something to race against each other." What I want to say is that motorsports has a long-standing tradition in America. We hope that as motorsports further develops in the Chinese market, our experience can guide its progress.

——Please elaborate on the relevant facilities.
We have built these excellent track facilities deep in the desert, and everyone is welcome to visit. All in all, Utah Motorsports Campus is like a self-sufficient city. Objectively speaking, the park covers an area approximately five times that of Disneyland California. This facility was built for the future. Larry is very visionary, and he wants our venue to be able to accommodate future usage scenarios. For instance, our parking lot spans multiple acres and can serve as parking facilities during races. In addition, we are cooperating with performance organizers to host an open-air drive-in concert. Thanks to the spacious parking lot, each vehicle can maintain a safe social distance, so we can ensure compliance with social distancing guidelines even when 6,000 people are present at the same time.
——How does it feel to be back for the first NASCAR-related event in 2020?
It is an ARCA (Automobile Racing Club of America) race, one of the West Coast Tier 3 series events — not the top NASCAR (National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing) national series event. Nevertheless, being able to compete again and interact with audiences and fans makes everything we do worthwhile. When you devote yourself wholeheartedly to an event and see everyone walking in with joyful smiles on their faces, that is what truly matters. Given the current situation and special circumstances, we are making every effort to keep motorsports vibrant. Fortunately, we have received support from a well-known multinational enterprise. Geely Holding Group and its subsidiary Mintai Group have been closely monitoring local COVID-19 conditions and global developments while providing support. Unfortunately, both factors are highly volatile and uncontrollable, but we will continue to work hand in hand to build a shared future.
